McCann Health Medical Communications Canada, Ltd. specializes in the four key areas of Medical Communications: Medical Affairs, Publications, Medical Education and Patient Engagement. Our teams execute and deliver both the high-end strategy as well as delivering the tactical; from manuscripts, abstracts and posters to slides, meetings, symposia, websites, movies, and applications. Provide high-level scientific, strategic and marketing insight combined with editorial leadership of account teams. Effectively line manage and coach (as appropriate) Writers and Scientific Team to ensure excellence in project delivery across the communication mix.
Core tasks and responsibilities include:
SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE • Combine in‐depth scientific understanding of the product/therapy area with commercial/market awareness to provide high‐level strategic and tactical communication planning within McCann Health and for clients. • Keep abreast of developments in the worldwide healthcare industry pertinent to medical communications/account/therapy area and communicate to the account and/or line management teams effectively. • Use proven track record to provide guidance on briefing and reviewing. • May participate directly in the design, development and inspection of applied scientific work of the department
CLIENT SERVICE • Establish positive long‐term relationships with a wide range of brand team members in client organizations. • Single‐handedly manage client meetings of all types. • Effectively troubleshoot/handle objections from the client/opinion leaders to ensure continuing good relationships. • Ensure any changes in the internal account/project teams are managed and communicated appropriately with the client. • May consult and negotiate with clients to prepare specifications, explain proposals or present scientific research reports and findings.
INTERNAL LEADERSHIP/LINE MANAGEMENT • Lead, coach and motivate account/project teams, providing support and guidance to team members on client and project issues. • Contribute to account team succession planning and resource forecasting. • Provide a professional perspective on quality procedures and editorial processes within and across accounts. • Develop close working relationships with team members, thereby enabling provision of regular feedback on performance, both directly and to line managers. • Through effective line management ensure training, development and appraisal of all line reports, including Writers, Senior Writers, Principal Writers and Scientific Team Leaders as required. • Lead, coach and motivate an editorial team, providing support and guidance to team members on client, project or internal issues, as required. • Participate in staff recruitment by assessing the suitability of candidates, as required • Actively participate in the company training and development program, coaching individual team members and leading workshops, as required. • Liaise effectively with account team leaders and the Head of Scientific Services to resource projects appropriately and to contribute to brand resource forecasting, as required. • Monitor, evaluate and promote company quality processes and procedures to ensure clients receive class‐leading outputs, as required. • Assign, co-ordinate and review the technical work of the department or project teams • Recruit personnel and oversee development and maintenance of staff competence in required areas
FINANCIAL • Contribute to the development of forward account plans in liaison with Account Director. • Support Account Managers by actively contributing to project specifications/cost estimates/reconciliations. • Ensure that any request for work outside the original specification is discussed with the client and communicated to the Account Manager, as well as the wider project team.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT • Identify new opportunities to maximize existing accounts. • Actively participate in new proposal development and pitches. • Contribute to the development of products and services and more efficient ways of working.
UNIVERSAL RESPONSIBILITIES • Efficiently manage competing projects. • Alert colleagues to any potential problems in a timely manner. • Communicate effectively with company colleagues and company contacts. • Work within agreed deadlines and budgets. • Follow company style guidelines and procedures. • Anything else reasonably required Requirements: • PhD in Life Sciences, Biology, Genetics or a related field. • 5 years of experience in a scientific project lead role within the pharmaceutical industry or agencies (e.g., medical communications, consultancy) that service the pharmaceutical industry. • Experience as a scientific strategic advisor of pharmaceutical clients. • Experience strategizing and delivering full scope medical communications products and services. • Experience leading global project teams. • New business development pitching and organic business development experience. • Knowledge of Good Publication Practice 3 (GPP3) guidelines. • Knowledge and experience contributing to client financial discussions and planning. • Ability to strongly communicate with all stakeholders in a timely and professional manner. • Strong ability to multi-task competing priorities and able to deliver per dedicated timelines.
